The Best Time To Visit Greece With Sailing In Style

Although the mainland and islands are beautiful year-round, the best time to visit Greece depends on what your group wants from the trip. Relaxed swims and long lunches, cultural festivals and late-night harbour strolls or exhilarating sailing conditions where you feel the boat come alive. The biggest factor is the Meltemi, a dry northerly wind that typically runs through the warmer months and peaks mid-summer. That’s not a bad thing, it’s what makes Greek sailing legendary, but it affects where you should sail and when.

Level Of Experience

  • Newer/non-experienced sailors: The best time to visit Greece is the shoulder seasons (May, June, September, October) in calmer areas, with milder winds and fewer crowds.
  • Experienced sailors: July and August offer the exhilarating challenge of the strong Meltemi winds in the Cyclades, though May/June and September/October also provide great sailing with lighter winds for a more relaxed experience.
  • No interest in learning to sail? Totally fine. Sailing in Style allows you to be as involved as you like so if you’d rather just enjoy the islands, any time can work.

The Meltemi, Explained

The Meltemi is most noticeable in the Aegean and it’s famously strongest and most persistent in July and August. In the Cyclades, that can mean exhilarating sailing days whereas in the more sheltered Ionian areas it’s typically calmer. So the question isn’t ‘Should we avoid the Meltemi?’, rather ‘Do we want the challenge?’

Pick A Route, Then Pick A Season

Sailing in Style routes naturally fall into distinct island groups, each with its own ‘feel’. The best time to visit Greece depends on your choice of islands, as the wind, crowds and activities alter depending on location.

North Ionian

Best time to visit Greece in this location: May/June and September for warmth without the full high-season rush; July/August if you want peak-summer buzz with generally gentle conditions for sailing here.

This is a brilliant choice for mixed groups, families and first-timers. The waters are stunning and journeys between islands are short. Corfu is made for slow afternoons and old-town wandering, whereas Paxos and Antipaxos are your drop-anchor-and-swim days, the sea being most inviting from June through to September. Parga and Sivota are ideal for a change of pace, featuring waterfront dinners, little bays and easy evening strolls. If you want tranquility, the smaller islands north of Corfu, Othoni and Erikoussa feel especially peaceful outside of July and August.

South Ionian

Best time to visit Greece in this location: May/June and September/October for relaxed sailing and fewer crowds; July/August for the hottest beach days and the liveliest waterfronts.

This route is basically built for sunshine and swim lovers. Lefkada brings dramatic cliffs and turquoise waters, and if you’re around in late August, the Lefkas International Folklore Festival is a brilliant cultural add-on. Ithaca showcases slower harbour life while Kefalonia is your big-beach, big-landscape day. Smaller stops like Meganisi are perfect for cave swims and lazy lunches on the boat, and places like Atokos, Kastos and Kalamos suit groups who want their Greece trip a little quieter, best enjoyed outside the peak weeks when harbours are at their fullest.

Sporades

Best time to visit Greece in this location: June and September for warm sea temperature without the crowds; July/August for maximum sunshine and the busiest nightlife.

The Sporades feel different to the Cyclades, being greener, softer and very swim-friendly. Peak summer in Skiathos is invigorating, Skopelos is home to beautiful hidden coves and Alonissos is a highlight for nature lovers, complete with a chance to glimpse protected marine animals.

Central Cyclades

Best time to visit Greece in this location: July/August if you actively want the stronger Meltemi challenge; May/June and September/October for a calmer version of the same iconic islands.

This is for confident crews who like their days with a little edge. Naxos is a gift because it balances beaches with history, Paros is fantastic for early evening harbour strolls and Delos is a UNESCO world heritage site with archaeological wonders best visited outside the hottest peak days so you can explore in comfort.

South Aegean

Best time to visit Greece in this location: May/June and September for lighter winds and quieter anchorages; July/August for peak heat and stronger sailing days.

If your group wants a bit of everything, this route is a strong contender. Syros adds culture with film and arts events landing within the summer window, Milos leans into beaches and evening atmosphere, Sifnos is a foodie paradise, and Kimolos and Folegandros are the antidote to crowds — especially rewarding in September when the sea is still warm, but the pace is more gentle.

Dodecanese North

Best time to visit Greece in this location: June and September for warmth without the busiest ports; July/August for sun and beach days.

This region is brilliant if your group likes variety. Kos is an easy base for beach days, Kalymnos has a great water sports scene, Leros has a more low-key, local feeling, and Patmos is home to the holy site, the Cave of the Apocalypse. Smaller islands like Pserimos, Arki, Lipsi and Agathonisi are all about simple pleasures, such as clear waters, quiet swims and dining at family-run tavernas.

Dodecanese South

Best time to visit Greece in this location: May/June and September/October if you want the region without full peak intensity; July/August for stronger winds and high-summer atmosphere (better for experienced groups).

This route has range. Rhodes combines history and old town wandering, Symi is a harbour postcard come to life, Chalki has gorgeous beaches and hiking trails, and Nisyros has an active volcanic crater that you can walk across.
