Greek Island Hopping – Which Route Suits You Best?

Greek island hopping offers a sailing experience for every type of traveller. This guide gives a quick overview of our main sailing routes, highlighting the sailing level, standout islands and what makes each region special; however, the Sailing In Style team will tailor your itinerary to your preferences.

Our Main Greek Island Hopping Routes

Central Cyclades
Sailing Level: Advanced.
Islands You’ll Visit: Delos, Naxos & Paros.

The Central Cyclades are perfect for experienced sailors looking for a challenge, particularly in July and August when the powerful Meltemi winds sweep across the Aegean, reaching gusts of 15-35 knots. Once the cradle of the Bronze Age Cycladic civilisation (3200–2000 BC), the islands later came under Greek, Roman, Venetian and Ottoman rule, each leaving their mark. History lovers can explore sacred ruins on the uninhabited island of Delos, known as the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, or wander the medieval Venetian castles of Naxos and Paros. This Greek Island hopping adventure offers a mixture of captivating architecture, beautiful beaches and lively tavernas.

South Aegean
Sailing Level: Moderate to advanced.
Islands You’ll Visit: Paros, Syros, Milos, Sifnos, Kimolos & Folegandros.

The South Aegean offers an exhilarating sailing experience with moderate to strong Meltemi winds and superb visibility, especially during the peak summer months. If you’re seeking a gentler voyage with fewer crowds, the shoulder seasons of May, June and September provide lighter winds and quieter anchorages. This Greek Island hopping route is brimming with natural beauty and island charm. Paros welcomes you with golden beaches, while Syros stands out as the cultural capital of the Aegean, known for its neoclassical architecture and exuberant arts scene. We’ll head to Sifnos for great food, Milos for nightlife, and Kimolos and Folegandros to experience authentic Greece without crowds of tourists.

North Ionian
Sailing Level: Beginner.
Islands You’ll Visit: Corfu, Paxos, Antipaxos, and mainland towns of Parga & Sivota.

The North Ionian is the gentlest of all the Greek Island hopping routes, offering calm summer seas and light breezes that make it perfect for families or first-time sailors. Sail through 50 shades of blue as you explore the emerald bays of Corfu and the less commercial islands of Paxos and Antipaxos. We’ll also explore the Venetian-inspired mainland towns of Sivota and Parga, whose hillside architecture resembles the Amalfi Coast. The lesser-known islands of Othoni and Erikoussa to the north of Corfu are a must if you want to bid farewell to urban noise and embark on an off-the-beaten-track adventure. This is slow, soulful sailing at its finest.

South Ionian
Sailing Level: Beginner.
Islands You’ll Visit: Lefkada, Ithaca, Kefalonia, Meganisi, Atokos, Kastos & Kalamos.

The South Ionian offers a mixture of small and larger islands, calm seas, light winds and short distances between islands. The route weaves through a mix of well-known and hidden gems, each offering its own version of paradise. Lefkada impresses with towering limestone cliffs and turquoise waters, step into mythology on Ithaca, legendary home of Ulysses, and explore Kefalonia, where scenes from Mamma Mia were filmed. We’ll drop anchor at Meganisi to visit the Papanikolis Cave (the second largest cave in Greece with a beach inside), and visit Atokos, uninhabited by humans but home to a drift of swimming black pigs! With tiny populations of 500 and 50, Kalamos and Kastos round off the journey with peaceful harbours and crystal-clear swimming spots. If you’re seeking a laid-back Greek Island hopping experience with breathtaking scenery and plenty of opportunities to swim, snorkel and explore at your own pace, the South Ionian delivers.

Dodecanese South
Sailing Level: Moderate to advanced.
Islands You’ll Visit: Rhodes, Symi, Chalki, Tilos & Nisyros.

Moderate to strong Meltemi winds make the Southern Dodecanese route best suited to more experienced sailors. The route begins with Rhodes, once home to the legendary Colossus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Today, the island is known for its imposing Venetian castle, lively old town and exceptional local cuisine. Sail on to Symi, where colourful houses paint the hillsides and the revered monastery of Panormitis carves out time to reflect. The volcanic island of Nisyros is a true highlight as you can walk right into its active crater, taking in bubbling mud ponds and steam vents emitting sulfurous gases. You can explore the island by moped for a unique Greek Island hopping experience. With stops at the tranquil islands of Chalki and Tilos along the way, this route combines historical landmarks, scenic beauty and adventurous sailing in equal measure.

Dodecanese North
Sailing Level: Moderate.
Islands You’ll Visit: Kos, Kalymnos, Leros, Patmos, Pserimos, Archangelos, Arki, Lipsi & Agathonisi.

The Northern Dodecanese Greek Island hopping route offers steady sailing conditions, fascinating history and a good mixture of lively and laid-back stops. Begin your journey in Kos, known for its sandy beaches and ancient healing sanctuary of Hippocrates. Continue to Kalymnos, the island of sponge divers and shipwreck-rich waters that draw in scuba divers, then on to Leros to visit the castle of Panteli. Patmos is home to the Cave of the Apocalypse, where Saint John is said to have written the Book of Revelation. We’ll also visit some islands you may never have heard of – Pserimos, Archangelos, Arki, Lipsi and Agathonisi. Tourism is limited to protect the islands’ rare and vulnerable plants and animals, making them unspoiled sanctuaries where nature thrives and traditional island life continues undisturbed.

Sporades
Sailing Level: Beginner to moderate.
Islands You’ll Visit: Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos & Kira Panagia.

The Sporades offer a lush, green escape with calm to moderate sailing conditions and short travel times between islands. This is a Greek Island hopping paradise for beach lovers and nature enthusiasts. Start in Skiathos, known for its lively town and golden sands, then sail to Skopelos, where cobbled streets and hidden coves set the scene for several Mamma Mia! filming locations. Alonissos is the jewel of the group for nature lovers, home to the National Marine Park of the Northern Sporades, a protected haven for monk seals, dolphins and seabirds. We’ll then venture further to the remote island of Kira Panagia, where solitude and pristine waters await. With forested hills and a slower pace of life, the Sporades are perfect if you’re seeking peaceful sailing and immersive natural beauty.
