A Tale Of Two Seas: Ionian Vs Aegean Islands

Greece isn’t one destination, but thousands. Over 6,000 islands and islets belong to Greece, scattered across two main seas: the Ionian Sea to the west of mainland Greece and the Aegean Sea to the east, stretching between Greece and Turkey. Of the 227 islands that are inhabited, only 14 lie in the Ionian, with Aegean Islands making up the rest. But what sets these two regions apart and which route is the best fit for your next sailing adventure?

What’s the Difference Between Ionian & Aegean Islands?

The Ionian Sea, bordering western Greece, southern Italy and Albania, is smaller and more shallow than the Aegean, which creates striking turquoise waters and calm sailing conditions. Fewer inhabited islands are found here and landscapes are typically more lush and green, making it a smaller but serene sailing destination, ideal if you’re a first-time sailor or those seeking a peaceful getaway.

The Aegean Sea, by contrast, is vast and varied. Over 200 of Greece’s inhabited islands are found here, divided into groups that offer distinctive experiences. The Aegean islands boast iconic whitewashed villages, dramatic coastlines, UNESCO-listed ruins and exciting nightlife. This region is also home to the famous Meltemi Winds, which sweep through the summer months, offering exhilarating sailing conditions for experienced sailors.

Understanding The Aegean Islands

To navigate the abundance of Aegean treasures, the islands are grouped into four main regions:

  • Sporades Islands – Calm seas, green hills and marine parks.
  • Central Cyclades – The quintessential Greek island experience, with whitewashed towns, dazzling blue domes and winding cobbled lanes.
  • South Aegean – Off-the-beaten-track gems, pristine beaches and authentic culture.
  • Dodecanese (North & South) – Closer to Turkey, these islands combine history and natural beauty.

At Sailing in Style, we offer routes across the Ionian and all four regions of the Aegean. Every journey is customised, with no two itineraries the same. We take your interests, pace and sense of adventure into account to build a truly bespoke experience.

An Example Sailing Route Through The Aegean

This suggested route through the South Aegean Islands offers a first-hand experience of Greece’s iconic beauty, history and culture. And when you book with Sailing in Style, we go beyond the typical highlights. Get ready for VIP access to restaurants and bars, snorkelling in coves only accessible by boat, and private tours of local artist’s studios.

Paros
Start your adventure on this elegant island known for its postcard-perfect villages, lively waterfront bars and delicious local food. Explore the ancient Byzantine trail that connects villages through the hills, or choose from one of its many beaches that cater to everyone, from families, to water-sport enthusiastics, to honeymooners.

Syros
Syros is less of a tourist destination than other Aegean Islands, but it’s definitely worth visiting. Its neoclassical architecture, grand town squares and abundance of boutique shops make it the perfect place to spend an afternoon. Its capital, Ermoupoli, is home to Greece’s first Opera house, ‘Theatro Apollon’. The island offers fewer crowds and more authenticity.

Milos
This volcanic island is famous for its lunar landscapes, sea caves and colourful fishing villages. Explore hidden coves by boat, swim in the crystal waters of Kleftiko, or visit the site where the Venus de Milo was discovered.

Sifnos
Sifnos is renowned for its traditional clay-pot cooking, where rich stews are gently baked in wood-fired ovens, infusing dishes with comforting flavour. Dotted with white chapels and olive groves, it offers scenic hikes, pottery workshops and some of the best tavernas in the Aegean. We’ll end the day with a sunset dinner in Kastro.

Kimolos
Just a stone’s throw from Milos, Kimolos is one of our favourite Aegean Islands and one of Greece’s best-kept secrets. Quiet, unspoilt and deeply traditional, this tiny island offers peaceful beaches and warm hospitality, perfect for slowing down.

Folegandros
End your route on dramatic Folegandros, a cliff-top island with staggering views, romantic architecture and a laid-back vibe. Due to its narrow, paved paths, the island’s main village, Chora, is car-free and often likened to Santorini without the crowds.
